Newbury darts player Luke Humphries is through to the second round of the 2021 Cazoo European Championship after a 6-5 win over Callan Rydz in Salzburg, Austria.

One of the games of the night between two of the sport's most exciting prospects saw Humphries edge out Rydz in a last-leg decider.

A tight affair played at a rapid pace saw the Newbury man end stronger, winning back-to-back legs to recover from 5-4 down.

“I knew it was going to be a very tough game but I'm just happy to get through it.

“We all know how good Callan is,” admitted Humphries. “He's a fantastic player, such a heavy scorer, and he pushed me all the way.

“Overall I think I was the better player more consistently, but we couldn't hold our own throw at times.

“It was a strange game - I was always under pressure but in the last two legs I was happy to put in a decent performance to get over the line.”

As a result, the 26-year-old will now meet Jose de Sousa, on Saturday, after the Portuguese number one ground out a 6-4 win over 19-year-old Lewy Williams.

Humphries, who has moved up to number 23 in the rankings is aiming for another impressive tournament on television.

“I love playing the tough games and the tough players and if I'm going to put myself into the top echelons of darts I'm going to have to beat them.”
