Impressive Hungerford find the winning touch

Danny Robinson’s Hungerford Town picked up their first three points of the season following a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Eastbourne Borough – the first time the Crusaders have beaten the East Sussex side since 2019.

The Hungerford squad wore black armbands in memory of the 16 innocent people who lost their lives on August 19, 1987 in the Hungerford tragedy.

The hosts went ahead in less than seven minutes when a determined Curtis Angell nipped in to win the ball inside the Eastbourne half before Adam Liddle slid in Joel Rollinson who blasted a shot into the bottom corner against his former club.

It was 2-0 shortly after half time when the impressive Kamaron English turned his opposing full-back inside out and picked out the arriving Rhys Tyler at the back post who smashed the ball in from close range.

“First and foremost, I think it’s been coming,” Robinson said.

“The three games before this I think our performance levels have been very good, we’ve just not quite had the rub of the green in front of goal, we lacked a bit of quality when we’ve had chances.

“It just needed one to go in, once that one goes in it gets the monkey off our backs.

“I felt we dominated the first 20 minutes, after the water break they were in the ascendancy but I don’t think Jed (Ward) really had a save to make.

“Second half I thought there was only going to be one winner, and that was us.

“Really pleasing performance, one swallow doesn’t make a summer, but we can enjoy it, another clean sheet and onto the bank holiday.”

Robinson was delighted with the performance of Joel Rollinson, whose strike was the Crusaders’ first goal of the season.

“He’s a cracking player, I’ve admired him for a long time,” Robinson added.

“He’s a local lad, the chairman worked really hard to get him, he’s a quality, quality player at this level.”

The shutout was a second clean sheet in four matches so far this season and featured assured home debuts from on loan goalkeeper Jed Ward and centre-back Jerry Gyebi while Curtis Angell, now in his third season with the club, impressed before he was forced off with a cut to the head.

“We have to keep clean sheets, that’s vital,” Robinson said.

“Jerry and Jed have both come in and been absolutely fantastic.

“The whole back five have been brilliant, but also what’s in front of them, that hard work and determination, that’s very important to us.

“Curtis has got a cut below the eye but he’s alright, he’ll still be out enjoying a drink tonight.”

Once Hungerford have recovered from their celebrations, attention will turn to next Saturday’s trip to Chippenham Town before the bank holiday Monday visit of Weymouth.
