HUNGERFORD will go into Monday night’s home game with Merthyr Town five points clear at the top of the Evo Stik League Southern’s Division One South and West after surviving a difficult test at The Cuthbury on Saturday.
Wimborne had the better of the chances but Hungerford’s finishing was more exact as Hungerford’s re-shuffled side took the points.
Harry Goodger might have put Hungerford ahead early on when he headed over while Paul Strudley was given plenty of cover and had only to snap up a free kick from Micky Hibbard before Hungerford went ahead with a free kick of their own, Ryan Crockford leaving goalkeeper Jason Harvell helpless.
Jamie Davidson missed an equalising chance but Hungerford should have struck again before the interval when Alan O’Brien raced through to set up Scott Rees but he blasted over an open goal.
Davidson hit the woodwork after the re-start but Hungerford broke out to score the decisive second when Ben Pugh popped up to beat Harvell with a snap shot. Steve Smith popped up to turn in Kevin Gill’s driven cross-shot to give Wimborne hope, but that was dashed when O’Brien again got away before pulling the ball back for Mark Draycott to pick his spot.
