Smiles all round as Hungerford host top tier tag tournament

More than 250 children smiled, splashed and scored tries last week as they ignored bad weather and slippery conditions at Hungerford Rugby Club’s annual Primary Schools Tag Tournament.

An impressive 25 teams from 11 local schools took part in what is a well-established part of the club and school calendar alike.

Teams were split into two age groups – Years 3 and 4 in one, and Years 5 and 6 in the other – and played round robin matches so that all the children had plenty of chances to enjoy their rugby.

Volunteers from the club and from other organisations in the town pitched in as referees, pitch marshals, first aiders and overseers and the town mayor, Helen Simpson, was on hand to present medals to all the children.

“We strongly believe in Hungerford Rugby Club working for the community in the town and beyond, and this is a day which reflects that,” a club spokesperson said.

“Every year we are treated to happy children enjoying rugby – many for the first time – and it’s a great platform to stress teamwork and sportsmanship.

“It wouldn’t happen without all our volunteers and the enthusiasm and hard work of teachers and parents, and the fact that so many people pitch in to get these young people out there, enjoying their rugby, is really rewarding.

"The best thing is always seeing the children buzzing with excitement at the end of the event and this year was no different.”
