Hungerford lose ground in the west

Mitchell Page’s 54th minute goal was too much for a below par Hungerford side to overcome, and it helped Sholing to nip a point above Hungerford and with two game in hand.
Perhaps more importantly, Gosport and Poole have closed in on Hungerford and will also overtake them if they win the match in hand they have in the bank.
Hungerford had the better of the first period without creating too much in front of goal. They did get the ball in the net when Mark Draycott headed home after Matt Jack had hit the bar, but it was ruled out by Swindon referee Daniel Jacecko for Daycott leaning on a defender.
Goalkeeper Stuart Wood had made a fine stop to deny Kyle Tooze at the other end and Tooze also went close at the start of the second period before Mangotsfield scored the decisive goal in the 54th minute.
It was a simple ball over the top that caught out Jon Boardman for once, and Mitchell Page darted in to life the ball beyond Wood.
Hungerford’s response was laboured and lacking spark, although they might have saved it when Scott Davis clipped the bar, and they should have saved it when Harry Goodger made a mess of collecting Boardman’s though ball with the goal beckoning.
Otherwise, a goal never looked like coming and Hungerford will need a few of those as they face a testing run, staring with Saturday’s visit of Gosport Borough.
