Dan's the man as Hungerford move to within a point of safety with Cheshunt win
Hungerford Town boss Danny Robinson described Tuesday night’s 1-0 win over National League South relegation rivals Cheshunt as “probably the worst game of football I’ve ever seen in my life”.
But it was perhaps the best night of the Crusaders’ season so far as Dan Roberts’ 86th minute header fired Hungerford to a third league win in a row and moved them off the bottom and to within a point of safety.
The Crusaders were 10 points adrift at Christmas but have since picked up points in eight of their last nine home games as Robinson's side moved up to 22nd following their third clean sheet in a row on Tuesday night.
"It's a massive win, it's absolutely huge," Robinson said.
"This month has been very good, to have three wins on the bounce with zero goals conceded and seven scored is fantastic.
"To grind it out and get the winner like we did last night, sometimes football doesn't have to be pretty and it's about getting results."
Returning frontman Dan Roberts scored the winner after missing most of this month and while Crusaders fans might be excited at the prospect of him partnering the prolific David Bremang up top, Robinson admits they'll have to be patient after the former Crawley man limped off with a knee injury last night.
"We're hoping it's not as bad as we first feared, but I can't imagine he'll be available this weekend," he said.
"Dan's probably still not 100 per cent fit but he's a trooper, we're going to need him and it's great to have him back."
The key to Hungerford's resurgence has been goals – the Crusaders scored 11 in their first 18 league matches but have bagged 18 in 13 since the acquisition of Roberts while Bremang has hit four in his first four games.
"I hold my hands up, I got the recruitment wrong at the start of the season," Robinson said.
"Now, I think the bench last night was probably the strongest I've ever had as a football manager, to be able to replace David Bremang with someone like Dan Roberts is massive.
"We'd been doing lots of things right before Dan and David came in, but the hardest thing in football is putting the ball in the back of the net.
"The two of them were the missing piece, we're lucky to have them both."
Hungerford face a stern test on Saturday with a trip to play-off hopefuls Worthing, who have lost three of their last five but beat Dulwich Hamlet 6-0 last time out.
"Worthing are a different beast at home on their 4G pitch, so we know how tough it'll be," Robinson said.
"As well as David we've got a few knocks that we'll assess on Thursday, but we'll go there full of confidence."
