Hungerford RFC fly the flag at Twickenham

Dreams were realised for a group of Hungerford Rugby Club volunteers on Saturday, when they trod the grass at Twickenham.

The Rugby Football Union invited Hungerford to carry the flags onto the pitch ahead of England’s clash with Australia to mark the club’s contributions to youth and community rugby.

Twenty six coaches, club officials and players walked onto ‘Billy Williams’ Cabbage Patch’ ahead of the game, bearing flags and banners, and took their places across the pitch as the national anthems of the two countries were played.

Hungerford’s programme of Mini, Junior, Girls’, Mixed Ability, Summer Love Play and girls’ Pitch Up and Play rugby have drawn particular praise and support from the RFU.

The club has also made great strides with outreach efforts to local schools, taking rugby to young people in Berkshire and Wiltshire.

Helen Daunton, Hungerford’s Junior chair, said:

“This is a testament to the incredible commitment of our volunteers and the support from our local community.

“Everyone from coaches to parents has helped make rugby more accessible and enjoyable for young people.

“It’s inspiring and rewarding to see their efforts recognised in such a high profile way.”
