Hungerford RFC raise money for local lad with 57-mile walk

A group from Hungerford RFC have walked to Bath in three days to raise money for a local lad with cancer.

From the 15th to the 17th of May, a team from the club took on a 57-mile walk across three counties.

Along the way they linked up with other local clubs and finished at Bath RFC just in time for kick-off, as they took on Leicester in a Premiership clash.

“We did it for Toby — a brilliant young lad currently undergoing treatment for cancer,” said a spokesperson.

“This was a walk to show our support, raise money, and let him and his family know they’re not alone.

“Together, we raised funds for four incredible charities helping Toby and others like him.”

These included Sarcoma UK, Teenage Cancer Trust, Young Lives vs Cancer and the Churchill Hospital Oncology Ward.

Day one saw the group begin their challenge by walking from Hungerford RFC to Devizes RFC, a trek of 27 miles.

“We set off from the club early, full of energy and optimism (which didn’t last long),” they said.

“The first day was a slog — 27 miles of fields, tracks, lanes, and canal paths.

“The sun was out, the blisters came early, and by the time we reached Devizes RFC we were well and truly knackered.”

Day two was slightly easier, with the team walking 16 miles from Devizes to Bradford-on-Avon RFC.

“Caen Hill Locks was the big feature, and not in a good way. The steep, pounding descent tested everyone’s knees, and the path afterwards felt longer than it was.”

The final day saw the group tackle the final 14 miles to Bath’s Recreation Ground home.

“We set off knowing the end was in sight, but 14 miles still felt like a long way on tired legs.

“We arrived at Bath RFC in one piece, collected our match tickets, and even bumped into England international Sam Underhill, who was a class act and happy to chat.

“A brilliant way to finish an unforgettable few days.”
