Hungerford Rugby Club host record Pitch Up and Play event

Hungerford Rugby Club set a record at the weekend when it staged Berkshire’s biggest girls’ Pitch Up and Play event so far.

Fifteen teams from 11 Berkshire, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire clubs contested the under-12s and under-14s rugby fest, with 150 girls making use of the Triangle Field’s pitches.

Players from clubs across the county participated, including hosts West Berkshire Warriors (the combined Hungerford and Thatcham team), Newbury and Didcot, Windsor, Maidenhead, Bracknell, Reading, Royal Wootton Bassett, Reading Abbey and Swindon, taking part either in their own club colours or as part of ‘Barbarians’ sides.

This collaborative approach helped players from different teams bond, share experiences, and strengthen their enthusiasm for rugby.

Pitch Up and Play aligns closely with the Rugby Football Union's strategic focus on expanding opportunities for girls in rugby, promoting inclusivity, and ensuring a strong future for women's rugby.

Wales international and Ealing Trailfinders centre Carys Cox is one of many who have already passed through Hungerford’s doors.

“We're thrilled to see such a fantastic turnout for this event in Hungerford,” said Helen Daunton, chair of Hungerford’s juniors and minis section.

“It’s clear that girls' rugby is on the rise, and events like this are crucial in providing a platform for young girls to develop their skills and fall in love with the game.

“We’re proud to support the RFU's mission to bring more girls into rugby, and today’s success is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved.”
