Hungerford Town walking footballers enjoy strong cup run against Oxford United
The league season may be over, but there’s still plenty for Hungerford Town’s walking footballers to fight for.
Hungerford fielded a strong squad for their league cup games at Bisham Abbey.
There were two groups of five teams, with the top two going through to the knockout stages.
Hungerford’s side featured two debutants in Lee Smith and Simon McAlonen-White, while welcoming old friend John Vaccaro, a summer signing from Oxford United.
The captaincy was shared between Dave Allen and David Tait.
The first game against Wycombe Swans ended in a fantastic 1-0 win against a side who were promoted from their league.
A thunderous strike from Vaccaro got the job done.
The second game was a 0-0 Draw with South Reading B, although Hungerford were on top for large parts of the tie.
They followed this up with a first ever win against Woodley in a 2-0 triumph.
The goals came from John Fletcher and then Allen, who took advantage of confusion in the Woodley ranks to slot home easily.
The fourth match was a 2-1 win against Tring.
A well taken Vaccaro goal was evened up when Hungerford gave a penalty away, which Tring duly dispatched.
Not shaken, Hungerford soon regained control, with Vaccaro notching his second and the winner.
Hungerford topped the group, setting up a semi-final against Oxford United.
It was a close game, with Hungerford having a Kevin Barbey goal ruled out for being inside the area.
With Guy Morrison relatively untroubled in goal, it ended in a 0-0 draw.
A penalty shootout ensued with Oxford scoring all three, while Hungerford had their second penalty superbly saved.
It was a tough way to go out but a great first outing in the cup for Matt Robinson’s side.
