Unbeaten NWX crowned Newbury Sunday League champions for second year in a row after win over Kingsclere
NWX are Newbury Sunday League champions for the second year in a row.
They faced title rivals Kingsclere in a make or break clash at Headley Playing Fields on Saturday.
NWX knew that a draw would be enough to seal the title, but they went one step further and took all three points in the decider.
Kingsclere made use of their home advantage, playing the better football on the day.
Harry Murtagh scored NWX’s first, as the game rolled towards the full-time whistle at 1-1.
This would have been enough, but the champions were keen to take maximum points
Charlie Knight scored the winner with five minutes left of play to give his side the 2-1 win.
It meant that NWX finished the season with a perfect record, winning sixteen out of sixteen games.
They conceded only ten goals, scoring 94 in a dominant campaign.
This is NWX’s second title in a row, having first entered the Sunday League scene in 2020.
This year they have proven invincible, retaining their title and reaching the finals of the Jim Wild Memorial Shield and Lambourn Cup.
Elsewhere in the league, Aldbourne Royals showed their ability in a big win at home to Diamond FC.
Their 4-1 win moved them up into sixth, as the race between the new joiners to be ‘best of the rest’ heats up.
Aldbourne are level on points with fellow newcomers AFC Aldermaston Sunday ‘B’, but have played three games less.
They’ll face Diamond away from home, then Kingsclere and The Crickets in the coming weeks to determine their fate.
Elsewhere, Frilsham and Plough on the Green played to a 2-2 draw in their final games of the league season.
The point did little for either side, meaning that The Crickets can jump Frilsham by winning their game in hand.
Plough meanwhile will finish bottom of the league by a point whatever happens elsewhere.
