Broom-Edwards braves Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins

Former Clere School student Jonathan Broom-Edwards returned to our screens on Sunday night as he braved shark infested waters and sheer cliff faces in Jordan as he takes on Channel 4's Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

Broom-Edwards, a Paralympic and World champion high jumper, teamed up with actress, singer and model Jennifer Ellison in the show's second week, which focused on togetherness and teamwork.

The episode's first challenge saw Broom-Edwards and Ellison leap from a helicopter into the sea before swimming, with their bergens and all their kit, unaided to the shore.

"I was nervous, but I was filled more with excitement – perhaps that makes me a bit of a masochist," Broom-Edwards said.

"Jen and I were actually the first ones to go, I was the first one to jump and then Jen followed.

"Before we even got into the helicopter we were alerted to the presence of sharks in the water, you can imagine how that made us feel.

"It was such a cool experience, we were surrounded by amazing views, the mountains and the water, it looked amazing, I had a massive smile on my face.

"I couldn't wait to do it.

"I jumped and as I came up from the water for breath, I noticed that my water bottle was about 20 metres away, so I had to swim to collect that.

"Jen was amazing, she was a much better swimmer that I was.

"We had to link up our bergens and then swim to shore, it was a real struggle for me.

"With Jen's support we made it."

Once all the celebrities had reached the shore, the recruits were subjected to one of the show's infamous 'beastings' on the beach.

That spelled the end for Love Island's Amber Gill, who had her armband taken from her and was thus removed from the course.

Soon after, The Only Way is Essex's Pete Wicks was medically withdrawn after sustaining two broken ribs and knocking himself unconscious when he leapt from the helicopter, leaving 12 celebrities remaining.

Broom-Edwards said: "We weren't quite able to see what happened from the shore, we were helpless, we knew he'd taken a hit.

"I'm not ashamed to admit that I was tearful and emotional when Pete left, we were all gutted, it was such a shame.

"We developed such a bond as a group, we wanted to help each other through, to have those two go was like losing two members of the family."

Broom-Edwards and Ellison later excelled in the 'hangman' challenge in which Ellison abseiled from a sheer cliff face while Broom-Edwards, taking the actresses' life in his hands, was tasked with applying the brakes at the right moment and stopping her fall.

"Jennifer bossed it, I felt extremely privileged to have her as my 'oppo,'" he said.

"I didn't have a lot of time to think about the brake point, it was about focusing on the right point and waiting for the right moment."

Broom-Edwards says viewers can expect "a lot of pain and suffering" ahead of the third episode in the series, which airs on Channel 4 this Sunday night at 9pm.
