Newbury Angling Association’s first pike match of the season took place on the River Kennet.

While the wet start may have kept some participants away, and the subsequent bright sunshine deterring the larger pike from biting, Kevin Richardson won the match with a perfectly conditioned fish of 7lbs 4 ounces.

Richardson caught his fish on a sprat deadbait to take an early lead in the annual four-match series.

Second was Nathan Wheeler (5lbs 9) and the organiser, Dave Taylor finished third (3lb 6).

All pike were returned to the river unharmed.

With previous matches regularly producing pike in excess of 10lbs and the occasional specimen of over 20lb, the Buckingham Cup for the overall series winner and Ben Smith Trophy for the largest fish are both very much still up for grabs.

The next leg is to be held on Sunday, November 28, at Collins Lake, Thatcham.

Entry is open to all Newbury Angling Association members. For membership enquiries please visit www.newburyaa.org.uk .
