Kingsclere make 8-0 statement, as NWX made to work for narrow win in Newbury Sunday League

A highly competitive game at Ecchinswell saw NWX hold on to their place at the top of Newbury Sunday League.

They travelled to face third place Diamond FC who put the champions under serious pressure after Jack Blackmon opened the scoring.

With their unbeaten record under threat NWX had to find a way through.

They created plenty of chances, but struggled to find the net, hitting the woodwork no less than three times.

Bradley Cox pulled them level, before Alfie Davies Ellard struck to make it 2-1 and complete the turnaround.

Title rivals Kingsclere provided a reminder of just how costly a slip up could have been.

They beat Frilsham 8-0 at Headley Playing Fields, largely thanks to a Dec Shuttleworth hat-trick.

Jordan Goater fired in a brace, while former Newbury FC manager Ben Wickens grabbed a goal.

Liam Hill and Seth Fowler grabbed a goal each to make it eight and keep the gap at the top down to three points.

Thatcham Tornadoes solidified their position in fourth with a 6-1 win at home to newcomers Aldbourne Royals.

This was Aldbourne’s second competitive match, having lost 7-0 at home to the same side last week on debut.

The remaining quarter final of the Knock Out Cup was played on Sunday, as AFC Aldermaston beat The Crickets AFC 5-0.

A strong Aldermaston outfit looked well equipped to win the whole tournament, as a Sam Allen hat-trick sunk The Crickets.

Owen Prince and Josh Allen got one each to send their side through to the semis.

Newbury Sunday League will now take a break until after the Christmas period.
