Kingsclere through to county semi-final on a day full of action for Newbury Sunday League sides

A mixture of cup and league action meant no shortage of goals for Newbury Sunday League sides.

Kingsclere enjoyed a memorable weekend, reaching the semi-finals of the Hampshire FA Sunday Trophy.

They faced Sporting Compass, a Southampton based side, away from home in Sunday morning’s quarter-final.

The hosts opened the scoring from a corner following a goalmouth scramble.

Kingsclere had their work cut out for them, but went on to dominate the game from that point onwards.

A change at full-back to counter the threat of a tricky right-winger helped them get on top.

It was George Dyer who got the equaliser, finishing calmly after the ball had flicked off three heads.

Kingsclere used the conditions to their advantage, as Jordan Goater delivered a series of set pieces into dangerous areas.

A long throw proved decisive, as Connor Thorne flicked the ball on to Seth Fowler who bagged the winner.

The 2-1 win puts Kingsclere just two games away from county level success.

Back in Newbury, the Jim Wild Memorial Shield got underway, a tournament for sides who exited the Knock Out Cup in the first round.

Thatcham Tornadoes showed their quality, as they beat Plough on the Green 5-3 away from home to reach the final.

In the other semi, an injury crisis meant that The Crickets AFC were unable to fulfil their clash with NWX, handing their opponents a walkover victory.

In league action, Diamond FC ran out 6-1 winners away to Frilsham.

Ty Driscoll opened the scoring with a calm finish, while Byron Luke scored a screamer.

Jack Blackmon, MJ Godfrey and two own goals helped Diamond cruise to victory.

Elsewhere, AFC Aldermaston Sunday 'B' beat Aldbourne Royals 5-0 at home to solidify their spot in fifth place.

The league’s two best teams, Kingsclere and NWX, will clash this Sunday as the Lambourn Cup gets underway.
