League and cup disappointments
Newbury hit by fellow league challengers and Lambourn exit County Cup after extra time
Newbury 2 Rayners Lane 3
NEWBURY failed to build on their return to winning form a week previously as they suffered a blow to their promotion hopes at home to fellow contenders Lane.
Newbury's bright start was undone when the visitors struck twice in as many minutes through veteran Lawrence Yaku and Dean Gardner and Newbury were facing defeat when they conceded a third goal just before the interval when Yaku was bundled over in the box for Lee Gardner to score from the spot.
Newbury battled to get back into it after the re-start but had to wait until the closing stages to lift their hopes when Callum Willmoth and then Ben Wickens netted to leave Newbury unable to salvage a point in the 10 blank minutes that remained.
LAMBOURN SPORTS bowed out of the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup 4-3 after extra time at North Berks League Didcot Casuals.
JR Willis' early goal for Casuals was cancelled out by Ben McCready only for Richard Knight to restore Casuals' lead midway through the first half and Hoey's second half goal looked like sealing the tie in normal time.
But Sports staged a late fight-back as McCready and Richard Guy struck in the space of three minutes to force the extra period, but despite having Lee Fuller red-carded, it was Casuals who snatched a place in the semi-finals when veteran Paul Powell crossed for Dan Cox-Rogers to score from close range.
