Limato out to run a mile

Candy's star heads for Newbury's £350,000 challenge

LIMATO will take the mile as Henry Candy sends his horse into the 41-strong early line-up for the £350,000 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 14.

The Group One contest over the straight course is the early season highlight for older horses and has been won in the past by Frankel, Canford Cliffs and Farhh.

Limato won on two of his five starts over six and seven furlongs last year, but this will be a debut over the trip. Kingston Warren trainer Candy said: “The step up to a mile is purely experimental. I really would not know whether he would or wouldn't get it, but on pedigree I think he should.

“I am happy to go straight to Newbury without a run.”

Richard Hannon has Night Of Thunder, Olympic Glory and last year's runner-up Toormore alongside Estidhkaar and Moheet in the race, and other ghome-based entries include Roger Charlton’s Time Test, Charlie Hills’ Dutch Connection, Clive Cox’s Kodi Bear and Andrew Balding’s Elm Park.

The scratchings' deadline for the race is mpions Series, is at noon on Tuesday, April 26.
