Bringing the good times back to the club – and the club back to the town
It’s been a difficult few years on and off the pitch for nomadic Newbury Town, but thanks to a group of local lads led by Danny Langford, things are looking up at last.
Newbury cemented their place at the top of the Hellenic League Division 2 East table thanks to an 11-1 thrashing of Holmer Green Development and have won their first eight games in all competitions, conceding just once in their first six league games.
Langford, Ben Wickens, secretary Alan Lovegrove and chairman Keith Moss have spearheaded Town’s recent resurgence and Langford is confident his side can keep improving and challenge for the league title.
He said: “It’s been a great start, but that’s all it is, we’re not getting carried away.
“We worked really hard in pre-season. Ben Wickens has done wonders with our fitness – we get 17 or 18 lads in training each week.
“We’ll keep grafting and take it one game at a time. We’ve set the lads challenges about what we want to be and where we want to be.
“We’re actually frustrated we conceded on Saturday, but we’ve been great defensively.
“We’ve got goals all over the park. George Armstrong’s come in and scored 12 in seven, Jake Allan scored four at the weekend, our midfielders have all scored and Carl Jenner’s scored four from centre half.”
Nomadic Newbury have been based in Lambourn after being forced from their Faraday Road home, but Langford is confident that constructive conversations are finally taking place.
“It’s all going well on the pitch and Lambourn have been brilliant with us – we’ve even replaced the Foster’s with Moretti at the bar,” he said.
“There’s dialogue there, it’s that one missing piece and we’d love to be at the heartbeat of the town again.”
