Hellenic League returns this weekend




The Hellenic League kicks off this weekend and there are plenty of local teams hoping for successful seasons.

Newbury begin their Hellenic League Division Two East campaign with a trip to Chalfont Wasps (Saturday 3pm), who finished seventh last season.

Town secured the services of versatile forward George Armstrong in a deal announced on Tuesday evening.

Newbury also swooped to sign midfielder Luke Polding from local rivals Kintbury, who kicked off their Wiltshire Senior League season with a 1-0 win at Pewsey Vale and made it two from two after thrashing Salisbury Development 4-1 on Tuesday.

Mortimer host Hazlemere Sports Crusaders (Saturday 3pm), who will be aiming to improve on their ninth placed finish last season.

The Villagers endured an up-and-down pre-season that included a 6-1 defeat to neighbours Kintbury and a 3-1 loss to Binfield.

Elsewhere, Hungerford Town Swifts’ Hellenic League Division Two South season gets underway with a visit to Faringdon Town’s Tucker Park home (Saturday 3pm).

The Swifts appointed a new management team of Jake Rowe, Danny Lachacz and Mark James in June.
