McAvoy looking for more, as Blues lose to Wimborne

Newbury Blues head coach James McAvoy was disappointed with his side’s performance on Saturday.

Their home game against Wimborne saw the visitors lead 19-0 at half time, before a second half comeback saw them reduce the score line to 24-19.

Following his side’s second loss in a row, McAvoy described what he saw as the main issues.

“The key word for us was wasteful, we were wasteful with the ball”, he said.

“We basically couldn't keep the ball past four phases.

“We wrote the word bravery on the whiteboard before the game.

“We need to find out from a psychological point of view, why it is that we can’t find this spark or can't be ourselves?

“Why don’t we feel like we can be brave from the off? We kind of let the other team dictate and then we find our rhythm a little bit late.

“Ultimately, we had chances to win that game towards the end of it as well… it was very disappointing”.

McAvoy will be looking to put things right on the training pitch, as Blues’ busy schedule continues.

“Training has been good, feedback from players has been good.

“We'll certainly look at the intensity of training and try and find aspects where we can actually push the intensity.

“We’ll need to go above game-level at certain points, not only to work on players' fitness, but just put their skills under a bit more duress.

“I need to see how they operate under real fatigue

“We're trying to build resilience, to be able to play in all conditions fitness wise, because the game won't be as fast flowing when we get into that December and January period”.

Blues are back in action this Saturday, as they travel to Andover in search of their first win of the season.
