Boxing Day bonanza at Monks Lane

Newbury and Hungerford rugby clubs came together for their annual Boxing Day match, a chance for all players over 18 to run off their Christmas hangovers.

Hosts Newbury were eventual 69-29 winners at Monks Lane although both sides would doubtless admit that the game was less about the result and more about the fun and entertainment.

Nevertheless there were a number of impressive performances, and some less impressive efforts, as both teams enjoyed a good workout while friends and family members concentrated on bringing the Christmas cheer on the sidelines.

Now, both clubs can look towards the resumption of their respective seasons at the beginning of the New Year.

Newbury Blues, who lie fifth in the Regional 2 Tribute South Central table after seven wins and five defeats from their first 12 games, host Buckingham on January 7 while unbeaten Women’s Championship South West 2 leaders Newbury Ladies travel to Portsmouth Valkyries Ladies on January 8.

Meanwhile Hungerford, who will resume their Counties 2 Tribute BBO South West season in fourth, host third placed Abingdon on January 7.
