Memorable week for hockey club as 10 of 12 sides celebrate positive results
Newbury and Thatcham Hockey Club enjoyed an excellent weekend, with just two of their 12 sides failing to pick up points.
All seven of the men’s teams were unbeaten, with five sides victorious.
Jamie Bairstow scored his first goal of the season as the firsts made it three games unbeaten with a 1-1 draw at home to Oxford 2nd.
The second team ended a run of two successive defeats with a 1-0 win over South Berkshire 2nd thanks to Matt Martin’s goal.
Oliver Soames struck a brace as the thirds won for the third game in a row, beating Banbury 3rd 2-1.
Geoff Neale and Willoughby Jordan were on target as the fourths made it six wins from eight in the league with a 2-1 victory over South Berkshire 2nd.
Two goals from Henry Peters and one apiece from Colin Irvine and Ollie Pace fired the fifths to a first win since early October as they beat Wycombe 4th 4-3.
Hugh Thompson’s brace inspired the masters to a 2-0 win over Bournemouth while Justin Smit’s goal was enough for a 1-1 draw with Yateley 4th for the sixth team.
The ladies’ teams endured more mixed results, with defeats for the firsts and fourths.
The first team are still without a win this term as they slipped to a sixth defeat in seven, losing 4-2 at Amersham and Chalfont despite goals from Holly Harris and Rachel Mulvany.
Mary Cavanagh’s fourth goal in seven secured a point as the seconds drew 1-1 with Wycombe 3rd, while goals from Elin Bartonwood, Kirstin Butler and Tamaryn Lang fired the thirds to a seventh straight win as they beat Wallingford 4th 3-0.
Two goals from Mieke Brown wasn’t enough to save the fourths from a 3-2 defeat at Phoenix Reading 2nd, while Amelie McKenzie, Beverley Williams and Tracy Sweeney were on target as the fifths beat Slough 3-1.
