Newbury Blues lose away at Wimborne, targeting Andover win this Saturday
Newbury Blues fell to defeat away at Wimborne on Saturday afternoon.
Blues were hoping to continue their good form, having taken two wins from their two previous games.
They beat North Dorset on the road at the end of November in a close affair, before battling to an impressive win over Petersfield at home on the 7th.
Blues travelled to Wimborne for the first game of the second half of the season, hoping to avenge the earlier defeat by Wimborne at Monks Lane, when they narrowly lost 19-24.
On this occasion however, head coach James McAvoy was forced to make no less than ten changes to his side due to unavailability and injuries.
Despite a valiant effort in a fiercely contested first half, Newbury only had a Dan Thorne penalty to show for their efforts.
Wimborne took their chances, going in at half time leading 15-3, having scored a penalty, two tries and one conversion.
The second half was owned by the hosts, who took nearly all of their scoring opportunities.
They made four unconverted tries without reply, earning them a bonus point and a five point league win.
A moment of respite came late in the game, when Tom Cole scored a consolation try after the Blues had thrown caution to the wind, producing some of their most exciting rugby.
The try was converted by the ever-reliable captain, Dan Thorne.
The 35-10 scoreline didn’t reflect the commitment and determination displayed on the field, and Blues showed heart and grit throughout.
Wimborne capitalised on their opportunities, while Newbury faced the challenge of breaking down a resolute and determined defence.
Newbury are back in action on Saturday, when they’ll host bottom club Andover at Monks Lane.
