Newbury bow out

FOOTBALL: New boy Elmore sent off as Clanfield score five out of eight in FA Vase tie

NEW BOY Barry Elmore hardly enjoyed his Newbury debut when he was sent off after 48 minutes as his side bowed out of the FA Vase in another Newbury goals feast, going down 5-3 to CLanfield at Faraday Road.

Elmore, newly arrived from Highmoor-Ibis, was a regular target for the visitors, eventually earning a booking himself and then being sent off in the course of being substituted following another clattering, for giving the officials a parting shot.

Newbury had slumped into a three-goal deficit with goalkeeper Jamie Thomas slicing the ball into his own net early on from a back-pass, Kevin Brooks converting a corner form close range and Lee Keyes nodding home the third. Dave Livings pulled one back, only for Dan Bishop to net a free kick, and although Ben Wickens made it 2-4 at the break, Elmore's dismissal soon followed and left Newbury with an even greater challenge.

Keyes made it 5-2 from the penalty spot before Newbury staged a late rally with Livings netting his second and hitting a post, and Jamie Green and Wickens going close.

MARK Draycott's sixth goal of the season kept Hungerford bouncing along above everyone else at the top of the Evo Stik League's Division One South and West.

Draycott fired home early in the second half, swivelling to send his 25-yard effort in off the woodwork. Hungerford's smash and grab raid worked as they held firm, although Josh Klein went close to denying debutant goalkeeper Stuart Wood a clean sheet.

THATCHAM maintained their unbeaten Evo Stik League record after a goal-less home draws with Paulton Rovers, but were otherwise left frustrated as Rovers emerged happiest with a point.

The visitors had to cope with the headache of losing skipper Dan Cleverley just before half-time for kicking through and under Thatcham's Paul Taplin.

But they had previously failed to capitalise on Thatcham's own headache, when they had lost goalkeeper Paul Strudley to a migraine attack within 15 minutes, forcing Scott Rees to take over.

Rees was hardly tested, and not at all in the first half when Thatcham made the best, and indeed only, openings. Tom Melledew tested goalkeeper Kyle Phillips from a free kick, as he was to do again later, and Jemel Johnson and Mark Hughes wasted openings, while Roberts' best chance was nodded in by Adam Mahdi, only to be ruled out by an offside flag.

Thatcham themselves could not take advantage of Rovers' misfortune when Cleverley departed although Melledew again went close from a free kick and James Clark hit the post, which also denied Rovers' Craig Loxton from a free kick.
