Newbury Challenge Cup won by hosts Donnington Valley

Mixed Pairs: John Goodhead and Anne Jolley, Donnington Valley (40 points)
Men’s Pairs: Derek Andrews and Matt Goodhead, Donnington Valley (40 points)
Ladies Pairs: Sue Lock and Gill Bowness, Newbury and Crookham (34 points)
Overall team: 1st; (winners of the Newbury Challenge Cup 2012) Donnington Valley (176 points), 2nd; Donnington Grove (150 points), 3rd; Sanford Springs (149 points).
On Saturday, Donnington Valley held its annual Charity Golf Day. Generous donations of time and money, as well as a day of enthusiastic golfing, resulted in substantial donations to Newbury Hospital League of Friends, Newbury Cancer Care Trust and Oscar.
Newbury Racecourse Golf Club Seniors held a four-ball, better ball stroke play competition.
Winners, with a score of 67, were John Butcher and Chris Piper, with Brian Faithfull and Tommy Lees just two shots behind. Third place, went to the winners for the past two years, Raymond Bilton and Lesley Cratchley, with their score of 70.
Three pairings ended the day on 71, with Paul Tebbutt and Les Eden taking fourth, ahead of Sandra Whiting and Tex Fitzsimons, and Ray Tillen and Al Drennan.
The Juniors August Medal, saw Max Nicholls win again, with his gross 72 (lowest gross on the day), nett 70 score.
Also on nett 70, but coming second on countback was Oliver Overend. Third spot went to Jack Unsworth, just one shot ahead of Luke Bannister who ended the day in fourth place.
Deanwood Park Seniors Invitation took place on Friday and was well supported by guests from neighbouring clubs.
Over 30 golfers contested the Ed Pamflett Trophy. The winning pair were Roger King and Mike Shearring, who scored 43 points in the greensomes format, finishing two points ahead of the field, with Michele Paduano and Clive Texeira runners up, and John Byrne and Brian Faithfull third, both teams scoring 41 points.
The nearest the pin prize was won by the late arriving Bill Kennedy and the longest drive prize went to Ted Andrews.
