Newbury FC lose narrowly at Faraday Road as YMCA prevail
Newbury Football Club lost narrowly to Reading YMCA at Faraday Road on Saturday.
Newbury were searching for a much-needed win against the midtable visitors, and things looked promising in the early stages.
Newbury’s young side fought their way into the match, applying pressure in the early stages.
They took the lead with just 10 minutes on the clock, as an own-goal put them 1-0 up.
Newbury battled to hang on to their lead, saving a penalty in the 32nd minute to go into the break at 1-0.
Reading YMCA’s quality carried them through in the second-half, as they scored twice in 20 minutes following the interval to defeat Newbury 2-1.
The side remain bottom of the Thames Valley Premier League, with one win and one draw from their 14 games.
Newbury travel to Denefield School to play title contenders Westwood Wanderers on Saturday.
This week it was Burghfield’s turn to face top of the league Wanderers, doing well to hold them to a 0-0 draw.
The result leaves Burghfield fifth in the league, with 26 points from their 16 matches.
In Division One, league leaders Goring United were in cup action, as they took on Kidlington FC Reserves in the Oxfordshire FA Intermediate Cup.
It was a rare defeat for the high flying side however, as they were beaten 3-0 away from home to exit the competition.
They’re back in league action this Saturday, when they’ll host Binfield Development U23 at the Gardiner Recreation Ground.
