Newbury FC win shootout to progress in Abingdon cup clash
Newbury FC progressed via penalties on Saturday, as they hosted Abingdon Utd Development in the Charles Twelftree Trophy.
A scrappy game saw some controversial decisions in the first half, as an Abingdon shot was judged by the referee not to have crossed the line.
Newbury went ahead thanks to goals from Jerome McIntyre and Kelsea Muburi.
The second half was a different story, as Abingdon battled back into the game.
Oli Booker’s late penalty sent the game to a shootout, where Newbury would prove to be more clinical.
Lewis Mortimer, Ashton Rudge, James O’Doherty and Harry Monger all found the net, while Donny Burke saved two penalties to see Newbury through as 4-3 shootout winners.
Newbury will host Abingdon Abbotts in the next round on the 9th of November.
Elsewhere, Burghfield also progressed to the next round with a convincing 4-2 win over Letcombe.
Goals from Rhys Iremonger, Ryan Farmer, Elliott Telford and Harry Harper were enough to seal a comfortable victory.
In league action, Division One side Mortimer Reserves had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Reading YMCA Rapids.
Jariece Nurse’s 36th minute strike was matched by James Croft’s goal, as Mortimer rose to third.
Goring United looked convincing, as they beat Fleet Spurs at home to go top by nine points.
Goals from Sullivan Akers and Harry Voice gave Goring a 2-0 lead at the break, before Robert Millsop added a third with ten to go.
Burghfield Reserves won a hard fought victory against Maidenhead Town Reserves.
Stefan Allen’s goal after ten minutes was successfully defended for the remaining eighty, as the side went fourth in the league.
Division Two side AFC Aldermaston Reserves went out of the Charles Twelftree Trophy on Saturday.
Visitors AFC Winkfield beat them 4-0 thanks to goals from Archie Branwhite, Herman Nii Addo-Quaynor and William Goddard.
