Newbury hit for five on first date

NEWBURY eventually fell to a heavy defeat at the hands of one of the pre-season Hellenic League favourites.
But they more than held their own for much of the game until Wantage’s power told with striker Jimmy Deabill netting a treble.
Newbury gave the home side an early scare when Ben Matthews headed against the bar before Deabill did the same at the other end. Deabill also headed over a Richard Guy cross before making it third time lucky when he hammered home a Tom Austin cross.
But Newbury cancelled out the gap at the start of the second period when David Livings found space in the box, and although he miscued his shot, the ball fell for Gary Dredge to tuck home the equaliser.
Deabill soon restored Wantage’s lead when heading home a Guy cross and the final 20 minutes produced three more goals, despite the sending off of Wantage’s former Newbury midfielder Danny Lachacz after collecting his second yellow card.
Guy was set up by Robbie Sadler for the third goal and Tom Melledew bagged the fourth from substitute Matt Pedder’s pass.
Pedder was brought down in the final minute for Deabill to complete his treble from the spot and a scoreline that was harsh on the visitors.
Newbury play their first home league game on Tuesday night when Abingdon United are the visitors for a 7.45pm kick-off.

won by the odd goal in seven at Uxbridge in a free-flowing game at the Division One Central’s ground.
Alan O’Brien was brought down for Ryan Crockford to convert the free kick and put Hungerford ahead and James Clarke pounced on a defensive error for the second.
Kieran Knight pulled one back from the penalty spot after Jon Boardman was penalised but O’Brien set up Stefan Brown for a third before Matthew Woods made it 2-3 at the interval.
The scoring rate slowed after the break after substitute Harry Goodger had netted Hungerford’s fourth, Jamie Connor headed a late third for the home side.

came from behind to win 2-1 at Chalfont St Peter with goals from Kalief Madden and Sam Hamilton.
