Newbury hit top spot

Football round-up: Hellenic League Premier Division place on the horizon for Newbury after five-goal win at Didcot

Didcot Town Res. 1 Newbury 5

NEWBURY went to the top of Division One East of the Hellenic League after disposing of bottom side Didcot at Loop Meadow.

Jason Peters put Newbury ahead after only three minutes and he and Neil Hammerston added further goals before the interval.

Glyn Jones pulled one back for Didcot with 20 minutes to go, but Darren Jones and Shaun Thorp stretched Newbury's advantage as they displaced Holyport, who were beaten 3-1 at Chalfont Wasps.

Newbury are a point clear and have a game in hand, a tricky one against fifth placed Woodley Town at Faraday Road on Tuesdaynight.

Bideford 0 Hungerford Town 0

HUNGERFORD are hanging on to their place in the Zamaretto League Division One South and West play-offs after a long and goal-less trip into Devon.

Both sides ended the game with 10 men following a late melee that saw Hungerford's Diak John sent off after Bideford had seen goalkeeper Matt Armstrong-Ford red-carded for cutting down Jemel Johnson just outside the area.

The goalkeeper had earlier denied Dave Asker from a free kick and a Ryan Crockford effort hit the woodwork before the break.

Both sides had their chances after the interval, and after John had departed, Hungerford might have won it late on when the ball fell to Matt Pedder but he put a good chance wide.

Hungerford have another long trip on Thursday night when they go to Cinderford Town.

Thatcham Town 1 AFC Totton 4

THATCHAM'S six-match winning streak of clean sheets came to an end at the hands of league leaders Totton at Waterside Park.

Totton were given an early wake-up call when Will Bratt pounced to score after four minutes when goalkeeper Grant Porter could only parry James Clark's shot and Matt Bowler might have added a second when he put a header straight at the goalkeeper from Robbie Sadler's cross.

But Totton never really looked back after levelling the scores midway through the first half when Nat Sherborne clipped a shot over Iain McCulley from outside the box, and former Thatcham marksman Stefan Brown poked them ahead before the break.

Sherborne added a third early in the second period and Jonathan Davies wrapped it up by bursting inside to leave McCulley helpless.

Thatcham are back in action tonight (Monday) away to Paulton Rovers.
