Newbury Ladies on a roll
Newbury Ladies cemented their place at the top of the Women’s Championship South West 2 table, beating Ivybridge 22-13 to extend their advantage and remain unbeaten.
Captain Lizzie Harris set the tone with a fantastic individual try, proving too quick for the opposition’s defence before the ever-reliable boot of Chloe Hunt added the conversion to make it 7-0.
Nevertheless Ivybridge were to prove a stern test and moved into a narrow 8-7 lead following a penalty and then a try of their own.
Newbury fought back and regained their lead before the break, Hunt charging over the line to make it 12-8 at half time.
The hosts extended their lead after the break, utilising their strong scrum and well drilled back line to spread the ball wide into space, setting up exciting winger Chloe Darby who touched down under the posts to move the score to 17-8.
Ivybridge hit back and scored their second try of the game to reduce the arrears to 17-13 but Newbury weathered the ensuing storm and wrapped up another win when Roisin Winston crossed for the hosts, sealing a 22-13 win.
Next up Newbury welcome Havant for a cup contest on November 27.
