Newbury primed for league starter
It will be just over 30 years since the former Newbury Town bid farewell to the competition to join the Isthmian League, and the phoenix club will face Highworth Town as the competition returns to Faraday Road.
Manager Steve Melledew has boosted his squad with several close seaons signings. In have come prolific marksman Ray Spence, defender Mark James, utilty players Robbie Sadler and Chris Collins and goalkeeper Andy Bayliss.
On the debit side, midfielder Marc Piper is tied down by work commitments and last season’s top scorer Jeff Kalejaiye has not been seen.
“But we are very, very strong now,” said Steve Melledew. “As strong as we can possibly be with what’s available. I think we have a squad that can cope well.
“I’m surprised myself that I’ve got so many good players, but that’s the way it goes and what a manager’s job is all about.”
Newbury have also been boosted by the appointment of Craig Adey as coach. “He’s enthusiastic and a very, very good coach and it’s a great bonus for me,” said Melledew.
