Newbury Racecourse kicks off Jumps season in style

The 2024 National Hunt season got underway at Newbury Racecourse on Thursday, with a seven-race card providing plenty of value for punters.

The action began at 12:30, with a handicap hurdle run over 2m 69y.

Aurigny Mill took the win, becoming the first winner of Newbury’s Jump season from odds of 4/1.

A novice’s hurdle at 1:05 saw something of an outside winner, as Brendan Powell rode Hartington to victory, beating Ben Jones’ odds-on favourite Roysse.

Jones made amends in the very next race however, as he won the 2m 7f novices' limited handicap chase with 6/1 Bowtogreatness, staying on well after being driven toward the last.

The fourth race of the day was at 2:17 and it saw the Skelton’s take their first Newbury win of the season.

Listentoyourheart was an odds-on favourite and certainly lived up to the billing, chasing down the leaders before taking the lead with one to go, going uncontested on the final stretch.

The 2:52 saw another favourite win, as American Sniper lived up to the name by powering straight through the pack, as jockey Jack Tudor claimed victory.

Yet another favourite won the 3:27, as Tom Cannon guided Masaccio to a win over Paul Nicholls’ Twinjets, ridden by Harry Cobden.

El Cairos won the final race of the day, working hard to beat Nicky Henderson’s Bobajob in second place, ridden by Nico de Boinville.

Excitement is already building for the 31 racedays to be hosted at the Berkshire track in 2025.

Tickets for Newbury’s 2025 action have been released as part of an exclusive priority sale, with all tickets available for less in 2025 than they were in 2024.

Alongside all racedays being more affordable the Racecourse has also introduced a new, ultra-discounted £10 ticket for two racedays – on Thursday 9th January and Thursday 12th June.

Newbury’s popular and best value ‘Four Saturdays’ Pass is also back for 2025.

These passes – granting admission to four big racedays – sold out in 2024 and are likely to prove popular again with prices starting from just £79.

Some of Newbury’s best deals are reserved for groups – with discounts available for groups as small as seven - meaning there’s no better way to enjoy a day at the races than with friends, family and loved ones.

Racegoers attending in a group of seven or more can save 10%, with those bringing 13 or more racegoers entitled to a 15% discount and a bumper 20% discount available for groups of 30 or more.
