Newbury Road Club looks back on a successful 2024
Newbury Road Club Cycling Time Trials had an exciting 2024 season, with several Club members riding their first time trials.
Around 30 events were held including the second edition of the Dave Jones Memorial OPEN TT.
The Club was also delighted to host the Army Cycling own Club’s championships within its end-of-season afternoon events.
From NRC, Andy Laycock again dominated the men’s Club scene, retaining the men’s 10- and 25-mile time trials, with NRC’s Ken Brown in second place.
NRC newcomer Abi Dean won the female 10- and 25-mile events.
NRC’s Dan McRobert showed great form in winning the men’s non-aero trophy, while Dan also won both the season-long Tate handicap and the 25-mile Smith Handicap.
NRC’s Ellie Gobey and Peter Fuell won the Sporting Course (SPOCO) trophies over its more challenging courses.
In a break with recent tradition, the Club held its Club Hill Climb on a Tuesday evening.
This year the long course was used, spanning 4.4 miles from Kintbury to the mast at the top of Walbury Hill.
For NRC, the fastest male was Peter Brooke-Wavell with Abi Dean winning the female race.
Overall winner was local talented rider, Scott Richardson, while NRC’s future star Jack Calvert received an honourable mention for second place overall.
In addition to Newbury Road Club events, the Club again held the Dave Jones Memorial Open TT in May on the H25/1a course from Theale and headquartered at Englefield Village Hall.
This attracted around 60 riders from around the country.
Once again, the family of Newbury’s Cycling legend Dave Jones were there to present the prizes.
The club’s next event is the traditional Boxing Day time trial, with the emphasis more on fun rather than all-out racing.
Fancy dress and unusual bikes are encouraged and there will be prizes, mulled wine and mince pies afterwards.

NRC is already planning next season, including a ‘Centenary’ Edition of the Dave Jones OPEN in May and a full schedule of Club races.
2025 will see the 100-year anniversary of the very first NRC time trial and the club is hoping to hold a special event to commemorate this.
