Newbury Rugby Club chairman condemns ref abuse
THE chairman of Newbury Rugby Club has written to fans suggesting that they should “support another club” if they are unable to show respect to match officials.
Hywel Price-Richards wrote to supporters following last month’s 16 - 12 home defeat against Cheltenham, in which he became concerned by comments aimed at the referee by some of the club’s fans.
Some supporters voiced their disapproval at a number of decisions, including disallowing a Newbury try 10 minutes from time.
However, Mr Price-Richards condemned such behaviour.
In the letter, he said: ”A number of spectators decided to take it upon themselves to “BOO” the referee at the end of the game blaming our defeat on him.
“To anyone who knows anything about rugby and was watching the game carefully they would be aware that Newbury had opportunities to win that game and can blame no one other than themselves for the result.
“I am very concerned that this occurred and that a number of our members have decided they know the laws better than the referee and are able to see what happens better than the referee even though they are at times about 100m from the play.
“If any of you feel this is the correct way to behave then I suggest you find another club to support as your attitudes and beliefs are not welcome at Newbury RFC.
“We have the right to ask anyone to leave the premises if they are unable to behave themselves to the manner required at this club as we do not want to descend to the depths of behaviour prevalent at some association football matches and clubs.”
He concluded: “The referee is our guest and should be treated as such with courtesy and dignity.”
