Newbury Velo celebrates passion for cycling and community spirit at annual awards evening
The Chequers Hotel buzzed with warmth and camaraderie this weekend as Newbury Velo's annual awards evening filled the venue and brought together cyclists of all abilities to celebrate their shared passion for two wheels.
The February 1st event captured the essence of what makes cycling special – the joy of riding together, supporting each other, and building lasting friendships.
In an emotion-filled evening, the club honoured those who embody its core values.
Richard and Suzanne Wilson received the Spirit of Steelie award, having gone from newcomers to integral members of the cycling family.
Chloe Marriage was celebrated for the enthusiasm and energy she's brought since joining with her dad Tom in 2024, exemplifying how new members enrich the club's vibrant community.
The club paid tribute to its foundations with special recognition of Charlie Elsey, one of the founders whose vision and dedication to Cyclocross competition has helped shape the club's off-road offering.
Kevin Hurley's journey from Secretary to Chair to President over the club's five-year history was celebrated with the President’s Award and Life Membership for significant contribution to the Club, acknowledging his instrumental role in fostering the club's supportive environment.
Drawing inspiration from professional cycling's traditions, special jerseys were awarded to standout members who inspire others.
Tom Coles and Liz Fraser received the pink polka dot jersey for hill climb achievements, while chair, Simon Bowden’s dedication to club rides earned him the yellow jersey.
The green jersey went to James Avison, voted by club members as Ride Leader of the Year for his commitment to helping others discover the joy of cycling.
The evening also celebrated competition successes, including victories in the 10, 25, and steel time trial championships, with awards going to Tom Coles, Jon Healy, Sarah and Rich Edwards and Joe Kirton, while Alan Avison was awarded the Chair’s Award for Personal Development recognising his journey from junior rider to TT winner, and ride leader.
The Coaches' Choice Award recognised young riders under 12 years age, Phoebe Holmes won the award for attitude and hard work and Brody Trigg the award for outstanding progress.
Creativity in capturing cycling's special moments was celebrated through the Photograph of the Year competition, sponsored by Minim Healthcare Ltd with Steve Hicks winning the £100 first prize.
The club's community spirit extended further, as members raised £550 for the Ride the Night cancer charity ride through a cake and pudding sale that added to the evening's festivities.
The Club also celebrated its Highly Commended Award in the West Berkshire Community Awards and reaching the Final in the Newbury Weekly News Best in Business, for Sports Club of the Year.
"Tonight reminds us that Newbury Velo is much more and so different to a traditional cycling club," reflected Club Chair Simon Bowden.
"It's a community where passion for cycling brings people together, where friendships are forged on two wheels, and where everyone – from beginners to racers – finds their place in our cycling and triathlon family."
