Newbury Velo now one of largest cycling clubs in South of England
Newbury Velo Cycling Club has achieved a significant milestone, establishing itself as one of the largest cycling clubs in the South of England.
With 320 members, the club now boasts membership numbers that put it on par with established powerhouses such as Sotonia in Southampton and Reading Cycling Club.
Chairman Simon Bowden attributed the club's remarkable growth to its community-focused approach rather than simply pursuing numbers for their own sake.
"Sheer membership numbers are simply a by-product of what we offer local cyclists," he explained.
"Our draw is our hugely friendly approach to being a cycling club, and the coaching, activities, and events we put on."
This philosophy has earned Newbury Velo significant recognition, including the prestigious Newbury Weekly News Sports Club of the Year Award – a testament to the club's positive impact on the local cycling community, and an award all the members are proud to have won.
Among the club's popular offerings is their beginner-friendly Summer Cyclocross series, designed to welcome cyclists of all abilities.
The next event in this year's series takes place on Thursday 19th June, promising a fun-filled experience for participants regardless of their skill level, at Goldwell Park.
Riders as young as four years old take part, with parents running alongside.
After the novice events, the racers come out with riders up to 70 years old taking part.
“This year’s event is also a British Cycling Limitless event, which means that cyclists with disabilities are also welcomed, it’s a real spectacle, even just to watch,” said Bowden.
"We welcome every level of cyclist to these fun-filled events, we have fun races for complete novices, as well as full throttle races for the experienced cx rider”.
The cycling community will also have an opportunity to meet Newbury Velo members and experience their welcoming atmosphere firsthand at the upcoming Newbury Cycle Festival in Victoria Park on 14th June.
The event will showcase what makes the club truly special and provide an opportunity for potential new members to discover the benefits of joining our thriving cycling community.
