Newbury win impressive victory over Maidenhead

With three players under 20s Newbury looked to be short on power and size, but they more than made up for it with their agility and commitment.
The giant East Berkshire team unleashed wave upon wave of huge strikes but all round the backcourt they met valiant Newbury defence, from Jordan Ayres and Stuart McCulley throwing their bodies on the line.
Dawid Komarnicki played another blinder conjuring up seemingly impossible distribution for George Scholey and Troy Tilley to steer intelligently into gaps in Maidenhead’s defence to keep the West Berkshire team in touch.
Richard Cottle led the front court defence with committed display of blocking denying many powerful strikes. Little by little Newbury reeled in Maidenhead and finished with a flourish to win 25 -17.
Ed Cave came into middle blockers position provide some variety and relief in the second set to good effect. Realising they could not bludgeon their way to a win, Maidenhead opted for a higher percentage game rolling the ball over the block and sliding the attacks down the lines but they soon found there were no easy points here either as Troy Tilley and Jordan Ayres threw themselves to the deck to pick up last moment rescues just as Maidenhead prepared to celebrate.
It was Newbury’s bloody minded resilience that saw them battle their way to an impressive two sets to zero winning the second set 25-19.
