Newbury District Primary Schools youngsters win first title in 31 years
On Saturday, Newbury District Primary Schools FA U11s were crowned Cotswold League champions for the very first time in their 57-year history.
Knowing that they only had to avoid defeat, Newbury got off to a great start in Wycombe, as James Airey gave them the lead after 19 minutes with a powerful strike.
Newbury doubled their lead just before the halftime break, as Owen Pugh's quick thinking released Shun Marter, who finished calmly to give Newbury the two-goal advantage at the break with one hand on the trophy.
A clinical performance from Newbury in the second half saw them clinch the title in emphatic style.
Two more goals from Marter either side of a long range strike from Pugh gave them a 5-0 lead just 11 minutes into the second half.
Newbury put the icing on the cake when Charlie Herald scored a late brace, the second a delightfully chipped finish following an exquisite cross from Oliver Clacy to give the scoreline a convincing look.
The final whistle blew to confirm that Newbury had ended the 31 year wait for a major league title.
Newbury's last league title was in 1993/94, when they were crowned Southern Counties League champions.
This was an extremely proud day for Newbury District PSFA.
The side have worked hard all season long, picking up some impressive results on the way to being crowned champions.
They have only lost once in the Cotswold League all season, an entertaining 4-3 defeat which came in their home fixture against St Albans.
In what has already been a history-making season for Newbury, they are still in the title race for the Southern Counties League and could also lift the Cotswold League Cup and Southern Counties League Cup.
Both the Newbury District A team and B team will also travel to Jersey during the Easter Holidays to take part in the English Schools Football Association annual festival, which is taking place for the 49th time this year.
Newbury District PSFA girls' team are also enjoying a successful season, they currently sit top of the Southern Counties League and will play Berkshire rivals Wokingham for District Cup on Saturday 29th March, a 10.30am kick off at Speenhamland Playing Fields.
