Armstrong at the double as Town thump leaders
Newbury’s undefeated start to their Hellenic League Division Two East campaign continued at the weekend thanks to an emphatic 6-0 win over league leaders Hazlemere Sports.
George Armstrong made it eight goals in five games, scoring twice as Town proved far too good for the table toppers.
Both Armstrong’s goals came in the first half, a strike from distance 10 minutes in and a penalty before the half time whistle as Newbury went in at the break 2-0 up.
The floodgates opened in the second half, captain Carl Jenner nodding home from a corner to make it 3-0 before a brace from Bailey Abrams and a 30-yard strike from substitute Tom Holland completed the rout.
Newbury will be looking to make it four consecutive wins when they travel to ninth placed Didcot Town Development at the weekend.
Elsewhere, Mortimer progressed to the next round of the Challenge Cup as strikes from Casey Warwick and substitute Matthew Bustin helped them to a 2-0 win at Watlington Town.
They’ll be in the hat alongside Hungerford Swifts, who beat Faringdon Town 1-0 thanks to Shaun Thorp’s goal.
Meanwhile, Kintbury Rangers’ fine form in the Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division continued after they beat Melksham Town Reserves 3-0.
The result means Rangers have now won six of their first nine league games this season.
Goring United suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Westwood Wanderers Reserves in the Thames Valley League Division One despite a first half strike from George O’Brien.
Goring lie 10th in the table, five places below Tadley Calleva Reserves, who were dumped out of the Challenge Cup on penalties following a thrilling 5-5 draw at the weekend.
Goals from Chris Smalley-Ward and Alex Vallins were unable to prevent Burghfield Reserves from suffering a 4-2 defeat to Hurst Reserves in Division Two, while Mortimer Development beat Old Windsor Reserves 2-1 in the Maidenhead Norfolkian Reserve Cup after goals from Noah Smith and Luis Weaver.
Goring Reserves picked up a point against Division Three leaders Binfield Development U23 thanks to first half goals from Jamie Taylor and Alex Halsey.
