NRC honours club legend with the Dave Jones Memorial Open Time Trial
Newbury Road Club held its annual Open Time Trial on May 21.
The fixture is a racing highlight and attracted a big turnout with riders from as far afield as Hull and Ross on Wye.
The event is now dedicated to NRC legend, Dave Jones, who died last year age 93, having been a member of the Club for over 75 years.
Dave’s family donated a trophy which was originally awarded to Jones in 1957 in recognition of his achievements for the club events that year.
This has now been re-named as the Dave Jones Memorial Cup and was awarded to the first placed veteran on the day.
Members of Dave’s family were present to award the prizes.
The race was held over 25 miles on the A4 between Theale and Colthrop.
Englefield Village Hall provided the headquarters for sign-in, live results and refreshments.
Sunny conditions and a moderate north easterly wind made for good riding conditions and some fast times.
In the men’s competition, Luca Morrone (Onyx RT) took first place, covering the 25 miles in 52 minutes 12 seconds, followed by Henrik Persson (Fulfil The Potential Race Team, 52 minutes and 53 seconds) in second place and Henry Taysom (Ex Machina, 53 minutes 40 seconds) in third.
Laura Pittard (Brother UK - Team InForm) was the fastest woman (59 minutes 23 seconds) closely followed by Celia Brown (Elevate RT, 59 minutes 29 seconds) with Sue McFarlane (Army Cycling, 1 hour and 23 seconds) taking third place.
The first veteran and winner of the Dave Jones Memorial Cup was Linda Dewhurst from Team Milton Keynes, with an age adjusted time of 47 minutes 28 seconds.
Second was Jeremy Redford from Army Cycling (51 minutes 19 seconds) and third was David Glossy from Elysium Kales Race Team (52:18).
The fastest rider on a standard ‘non-aero’ road bike was Thomas Willan from Elevate RT.
He covered the course in 55 minutes and 59 seconds.
Jymmy Trevor from City RC (Hull) was the fastest tricycle (1 hour 6 minutes 18 seconds).
The fastest Tandem was Ian Greenstreet and Rachael Elliott from Newbury Velo with 51 minutes and 55 seconds, the fastest time of the day.
The team prize, for the fastest aggregate time by three riders, was presented to Army Cycling with an aggregate time of 2 hours, 56 minutes and 3 seconds.
