Number six a big hit for Newbury
It was Newbury’s first success since winning promotion and although they remain bottom of the table, they are back in touch with the rest.
Skipper Charlie Anstey opted to bat first although he was first back in the pavilion for eight as bowlers revelled in the conditions.
The bulk of the scoring came early on, led by Matt Corne’s 35, while Ed Uden (23), Nick Fitzwilliam (16) and Richard Jones (10) were the only other double figure scorers.
A total of 34 extras proved to be decisive, a dozen of which were wides, as Newbury posted 144 all out at the start of the 48th over.
Sonning started soundly with Parr (36) and Boyton (31) taking them to 72-1 when Newbury’s three-pronged attack took charge.
Anstey claimed Boyton LBW on his way to a 3-42 return and Kevin Mills accounted for Parr in his 3-28 stint. Rajeev Hanabe attacked the lower order to claim 3-32, although nobody could remove Riley, who threatened Newbury with his unbeaten 25 before Anstey claimed last man Phil Wilding for a duck and Sonning were all out for 140 in the 50th over to give Newbury maximum points.
remain unbeaten in Division Two B but were denied another win and top spot as Kidmore End’s last pair held out for a draw at Brownsfield. Josh O’Flynn cracked an unbeaten 89 and Ross Schreiber 67 as Thatcham romped to 203-3 in 43 overs, the game reduced to 84 in total.
The visitors survived for their 41, posting 152-9 to deny Thatcham the 10 extra points that would have taken them clear at the head of the table.
Hampshire League Two fixture with Otterbourne was one of a number abandoned after Hungerford had made 191 all out with Laren Guthrie’s unbeaten 60 the top score. Otterbourne were 36-1 after eight overs when play was halted.
