Newbury Sunday League: NWX seal unbeaten treble with Lambourn Cup triumph
NWX sealed an unbeaten treble on Sunday as they won the Lambourn Cup.
The Newbury Sunday League champions ran out 3-0 winners against Diamond FC at Lambourn Sports Club.
A brilliant run down the left side by Kye Williams saw him set up Alfie Davis Ellard for the opener, as NWX took control of the final.
He turned creator for the second, breaking down the right to set up Harry Murtagh, who finished a quick breakaway move to put NWX 2-0 up and into a comfortable lead.
As the champions looked to kill the game off, a pair of quick one-twos released Davis Ellard in space.
He tucked a perfect finish into the bottom-left corner to wrap things up and hand his side the cup.
The result seals an unprecedented achievement for NWX.
They have won the league, Jim Wild Memorial Shield and Lambourn Cup this season without losing a game in any of those three competitions.
Their league campaign was a ruthless one, edging title contenders Kingsclere by six points, thanks to a pair of wins against their only rivals for the crown.
They smashed in 94 goals across their 16 games, an immense average of 5.9 per-game, and conceded only ten in total.
NWX’s dominance this season is the result of a five year journey for the side.
The club backed by Northworx Ltd, a groundworks company based in Thatcham, first appeared in 2020/21.
That year they won only five games in the old second tier, finishing fourth from bottom.
They would win the title and seal promotion with an unbeaten record the next year, before a midtable finish in 2022/23.
Two successive titles followed, and as the league continues to grow the side now stands as the example for others to aim for.
Nine clubs are currently set to compete next season, with many anticipating more to join over the summer.
All of them will hope to be the one who disrupts the dominance of Newbury Sunday League’s premier side.
Sunday will see the Knockout Cup final, as AFC Aldermaston face Diamond FC at Lambourn.
Kick off is at 10:30 for the last of the league’s cup finals.
Later this month, Kingsclere will compete in a county cup final, as they take on AFC Tukkers in the Hampshire FA Sunday Trophy Final.
The match is scheduled for 10:30 on May 25th at Stoneham Lane Football Complex.
