Oisin Murphy wins again for Andrew Balding as Flat season continues at Newbury

Newbury Racecourse held their final big event of the summer at the weekend, as Dizzee Rascal delighted racegoers on Saturday.

On track however, there was the small matter of some high class racing and it was an exciting weekend for some of the area’s top trainers.

Action got underway on Friday, when Andrew Balding’s Musical Angel took a hard earned third place in the Novice Stakes at 14:40.

Less than two hours later it was Owen Burrows’ turn to enjoy a high finish, as Game Set tracked the leaders all the way to take a third place finish.

As Saturday afternoon arrived, a competitive seven race card awaited, the first of which saw the imperious Al Aasy cruise to his seventeenth win in a row in the 13:50.

The biggest race of the meeting was the Group 2 BetVictor Hungerford Stakes at 15:35, with Ed Walker hoping that English Oak could deliver a more convincing performance after a run of poor form.

His 3/1 shot was only good enough for sixth however, beaten by his stablemate Popmaster at 25/1.

Tiber Flow won the race from odds of 4/1, ridden by Tom Marquand for William Haggas. Oisin Murphy on favourite Kikkuli could only manage fourth.

The 16:40 would bring a much needed result for the local trainers on a challenging day, as Hollie Doyle rode Bas Bleu to a second place finish for Ed Walker.

The 12/1 shot ran well and moved into second place with a furlong to go, just unable to catch Rossa Ryan on Hutchence.

The last race of the meeting was the Childwickbury Stud Handicap at 17:15, presenting one final chance for a local winner.

All eyes were on Oisin Murphy to deliver the goods on T'challa, and he didn't disappoint.

The 5/1 shot went unchallenged, winning by almost a furlong as he held the inside to take victory for Andrew Balding.

The Balding-Murphy combination has proven to be a fruitful one this season and continues to produce results at courses across the country.

Action returns to Newbury Racecourse on Thursday 29th for their August Race Night, kicking off at 16:45.
