Newbury Sunday League: Paggies Bar and Woolton Hill Argyle take top prizes in pre-season tournament
Paggies Bar and Woolton Hill Argyle were trophy winners as the inaugural Newbury Sunday League 11-a-side tournament took place at Theale Green School.
16 teams took part in the pre-season tournament, 14 from the Newbury Sunday League and two from the Reading League.
The teams involved were split into four groups of four, with the top two of every group going into the quarter-final of the Presidents Cup and the bottom two moving into the quarter-final of the Chairman’s Cup.
Paggies Bar beat Cottage Inn 3-0 in their semi-final, before going onto record a 1-0 win over Reading’s Junction United to lift the Presidents Cup.
In the other mini-competition, Woolton Hill beat Black Horse 5-0 in the quarter-final and beat Brimpton Rangers 3-0 in the semi-final to set up a clash with Cold Ash.
In a close encounter, Harry Monger scored the game’s only goal as they went onto lift the Chairman’s Cup.
The Newbury Sunday League is scheduled to begin in early September, with official dates and fixtures yet to be announced.
