Paggies up for the cup after NWX win
Paggies Bar FC geared up for their FA Sunday Cup clash with Ipswich outfit Borussia Martlesham with a thumping 4-0 win over Northworx to cement their place at the top of the Newbury Sunday League Premier Division.
Goals from Ryan Davis, Jake Allan, Sam Conners and Sebastian Beeny helped Paggies maintain their unbeaten start to the season in emphatic fashion.
And manager Willy Greenall admits he’s expecting “a few sore heads” as his side make the 156 mile trip up to Suffolk on Sunday morning, the night after England’s World Cup quarter-final with France.
“That’s what it’s all about, we’re expecting it to be a fantastic experience even if some of the lads might have been out the night before,” Greenall said.
“I imagine there will be a few sore heads in the morning, I can’t ask my lads to all stay in on Saturday night, that wouldn’t be right.
“It’s a learning experience for us, our first time in this competition, it’ll be entertaining that’s for certain.
“We’ve got a top group of lads and some fantastic players, who knows what might happen.”
Elsewhere, Berkshire Wanderers beat Thatcham Tornadoes 5-3 in a thrilling clash that saw Wanderers move up to fifth in the Division One table.
In true Sunday League fashion, Brimpton Rangers’ clash with The Lamb Inn was cancelled after players of both teams arrived to find that no lines had been painted on the pitch.
Instead, the two sides played a friendly with Brimpton winning 3-1 thanks to goals from Charlie Peppett, Joe Wakefield and Sam Mildenhall.
Meanwhile, Paggies’ nearest Premier Division rivals, OLA Prestige FC, were comfortable 5-0 winners over Newbury Lions, a result that moves them within a point of the league leaders.
