Preview and tips for today’s action at Newbury Racecourse
There are just five Flat meetings of the season to go at Newbury and the latest card takes place at the track on Thursday evening.
The seven-race meeting kicks off at 4.05pm with a maiden fillies’ stakes in class four before the action rounds off at 7.10pm with another class four contest, this time a six furlong handicap.

Plenty of the big yards are represented in the opening race on the Newbury card (4.10) which sees all 15 runners take to the track for the very first time.
Suhub represents the top class William Haggas yard and there is tons to like on paper, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Mostahdaf and her Dam is Nazeef, a winner of the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes in 2020 and Sun Chariot Stakes that same year.
Gigi Bliss for trainer Richard Hannon holds some big-race entries further down the line including the Group 1 Fillies Mile next month and the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes later this month, so has to be one to keep an eye on as well.
Race two of the afternoon (4.40) sees eight runners head to the stalls for the seven furlong fillies handicap in class four.
Rosa Applause is unexposed on turf having raced on grass just twice and should appreciate the step up in trip on Thursday after a third at Haydock last time out.
On the flip side, Circe is dropping down in distance here and will be a big player having been a previous winner at Newbury in July and is also eased in class.
A field of seven will take on race three on Newbury’s card (5.10) which is a class four nursery over six furlongs and open for two-year-old’s only.
Preference here is for the Richard Hannon-trained Miss Collada, a winner at Salisbury in May who followed up with a good third of 14 in a Newmarket minor event a fortnight ago and is eased down in grade here.
Of her rivals, Equalised could be the one to step up venturing down the nursery route having shown enough in three previous qualifying runs but needs to take a step forward.
The midway point of the card arrives at 5.40 with a ten-runner handicap in class four over the one mile and four furlong trip.
The Glen Rovers hasn’t got too many miles on the clock and is up in trip for trainer Lucy Wadham off the back of a career-best when landing a Newcastle handicap 40 days ago.
Boy George is the clear threat here, on a hat-trick after scoring at Windsor and Bath on his last two runs.
Boxtel has shown plenty in course and distance novice contests at this track and is backed to make it third time lucky when taking on the 11-runner maiden stakes in class four to mark race five on the card (6.10) having found just one too good on his last two starts for trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam.
Bolo Neighs is the big danger here, a clear second at Bath on his last spin and the winner of that race has since gone on to win in Group 3 company over in France so that Bath second is a superb piece of form.
The penultimate race on Thursday’s card is a 12-runner handicap in class five over seven furlongs (6.40) and Where’s Freddy looks the one to beat for trainer Stuart Williams, one win from three runs this year and that success came last time out when cheekpieces were applied for the first time and he was a ready winner at Newmarket, so is penalised 7lb in the weights here for that success but can shoulder that penalty.
Course and distance winner State Flag is a big player, having landed a course and distance handicap 42 days ago despite being slowly out of the gate.
Finally, the card comes to a close with a class four handicap over six furlongs in class four (7.10) and the nod in the finale goes to Bright, trained by David Loughnane, a three-time winner from eight runs this year and the best of them was last time out, scoring in a 14-runner contest at Newcastle and can defy a 3lb rise in the weights here.
