Reading legends Long and McDermott to appear, as Tadley Calleva host charity match
Shane Long and Brian McDermott are set to appear as Tadley Calleva hold a charity match for Young Lives vs Cancer on Sunday.
The Reading FC icons will be helping to raise money as a Tadley XI face an Aldermaston XI at Barlows Park.
Kick off is at 12:30, with admission just £5 and all proceeds going directly to Young Lives vs Cancer.
Under-16s can get in for just £2 and the club bar will be open on the day.
Behind it all is Luke Walkley, who will also be running the 2024 TCS London Marathon for the charity.
Walkley was inspired to help the charity when his brother in law, Stanley Willis, was rushed to A&E earlier this year.
CT and MRI scans revealed a brain tumour within the cerebral fluid underneath the brain, which was limiting Willis’ balance and speech.
This particular cancer is extremely rare, with only 20 known cases worldwide.
An 11-hour surgery was made complicated due to the tumour’s location, and was only able to remove two thirds of it.
Having witnessed the bravery shown by his brother in law, Walkley decided to raise money for others facing cancer.
“Join me in supporting a good cause,” he said.
“Every day 12 more children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer.
“Young Lives vs Cancer helps families find the strength to face everything cancer throws at them.
“We'll face it all together - but we can't do it without you.
“By sponsoring me, your contribution will make a huge difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer.
“Whether you donate £5 or £500 you will be making a big impact. Thank you for your support.”
Tickets for Sunday’s match are available on the gate, while those wishing to sponsor Walkley can do so at 2025tcslondonmarathon.enthuse.com/pf/luke-walkley
