Rivals' defeat leaves Hungerford in driving seat

Play-off spot in own hands as Hungerford face an Easter weekend double

IT WILL be a tense Easter weekend for players and suporters at Hungerford Town and Thatcham Town after their pursuit of the final promotion play-off spot in the Zamnaretto League's Division One South and West was left in the hands of the West Berkshire clubs.

North Leigh's 4-0 home hammering at the hands of Sholing on Tuesday night leaves Hungerford sat in the vital fifth place with the two Easter games to play, while Thatcham are a single point behind, but with a better goal difference.

It leaves both with everything to play for, and with Hungerford knowing that two wins will do it for them.

The first of those is on Saturday at Bulpit Lane against a Frome Town side that has already sealed fourth place, and Hungerford manager BobbyWilkinson is hoping that will ease the demands on his own side.

“It's a tough one,” he said, “but how do they approach it? They are already in the play-offs and will finish fourth.

“Do they rest some of their key players and give them a weekend off to keep them fresh for the play-offs?

“That's what I would do!”

If Hungerford win that game, then they will take a tricky trip to Abingdon United on Monday, where a win would complete the task.
