Hungerford Rugby Football Club

THE future of rugby in West Berkshire is – literally – in good hands, judging by the evidence of the recent Primary Schools Tag Tournament.

Tony Jefferies writes:

"Hosts Hungerford Rugby Club were staging the event for the first time in three Covid-affected years and the smiling faces showed how much it had been missed.

"More than 180 boys and girls from eight schools across the area took part, split into two age groups – Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6.

"There were medals for all players – presented by Hungerford mayor Helen Simpson and donated by the town’s Rotary Club, who also provided pitch marshals.

"Referees and other volunteers came from the rugby club’s junior and senior sections."

Juniors section chairwoman Tracy Cox said: “It was so good to look across the Triangle Field and see so many youngsters playing, laughing and having fun after such a long absence.

"We’ve had wonderful feedback from parents and teachers saying how much the children enjoyed the day, which is what this event is all about. It shows the values of rugby.

"That it’s a game for everyone – boys and girls, big and small – and it's all about teamwork."
