Ryan's five-star show on record-breaking day
Night of Thunder's day for Doyle in the showpiece race
RYAN MOORE scored a stunning five-hander at Newbury Racecourse’s record-breaking Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes meeting on Saturday, but it was the big prize that eluded him.
It was Lambourn rider James Doyle who claimed the ‘big one.’ Riding joint favourite Night of Thunder to a Richard Hannon-one-two in the featured race that was worth £350,000.
A superb finish saw last year’s 2,000 Guineas winner edge out stablemate Toomore and Richard Hughes to win by a neck in front of a crowd of 13,343.
The blue silks served to spoil Moore’s start, that saw him win the opening four races on his way to a 1,962-1 return. But his fourth place on Integral came as a relief to bookies, who stood to lose around £20 million after Moore was backed before and during his handful.
A successful day also saw no repeat of the ‘hungry horse rider’ fun of Friday when jockey Cathy Gannon issued a Twitter complaint about jockeys’ food when she missed the chicken course at the jockeys’ buffet table to find only a carcass remaining.
The jockey was fined £290 by the stewards, not for making the complaint, but for doing it while using her mobile phone from within the forbidden confines of the weighing room, a sum that was paid by fellow jockeys after they had a collection.
